Background:
            The County of Sydney was created in 1784.  In 1823 the County was divided into upper and lower districts.  Guysborough Township was part of the lower district of Sydney County from 1784 until 1836 when Guysborough County was established.   Most of the records date from the earlier period.
            
Contents:
            The Registry Book contains births, marriages and deaths, and in many instances all of the entries for one family have been recorded together.  Also included are lists of Loyalist settlers who have drawn town lots in Guysborough, 3 August 1790; front lots at the head of Chedabucto Bay, 2 June 1785; and in other Divisions of Towns and Townships.  Three other returns of particular interest are:  People from the late Sixtieth Regiment; A Return of the Names and Number of the Lots laid out [for] the Officers and Privates of Lord Montague's Regiment, commonly called the Duke of Cumberlands, February 1785; and A Return of Lots of Land laid out on the west side of the Gutt of Canso in the Township of Manchester to the Loyalists from St. Augustine, Florida, October 1784.
